Is it colic, or not?

Last night may have been a tease, and this blog may serve as a jinx...but Austin slept really well last night and wasn't cranky for more than 30-45 minutes in the last 24 hours. This is in contrast to the hours of misery and wrath that he brought upon his parents the day before.

The previous 2 days, he had been incredibly cranky for about 4 hours at a time. It was difficult to find out why he was cranky: Did he need to burp? (he stinks at doing that; only rarely does he have a productive belch) Did he need to poop? (he is EXCELLENT at that, but it doesn't mean he didn't have another "grumpy" in the works) Or is it just the dreaded colic??

We decided that if it was colic, we were going to find out what to do for it, and what caused it. For those that don't know, researchers are unsure of what causes colic. Sometimes it may be gas, sometimes it may not be. There is no true treatment for it, but there is some research to support massaging and vibrations in sleep. If it is gas, then Mylicon should help, if not it won't.

So we have started a very "geeky parent flow sheet" to chart Austins feedings, diapers, gas drops, and cranky times. Yesterday, we started administering drops more regularly (we tried to find a pattern of when it did or didn't work previously, but there was no apparent pattern), giving him monitored sleep time on his belly with a vibrator under him in the bassinet, and he his getting massaged 1-2 times every waking hour. So we did these things all day yesterday...

....and no tantrums!!! WooHoo!!! Unfortunately for Mom and Dad, Austin's great temperament yesterday was probably a coincidence more than anything else, but we are going to keep up with everything nonetheless.

Another bright spot yesterday (outside of Austin's pleasant demeanor) was that we were visited by the lovely (and surprisingly very maternal) Miss Hansen (the pic is with him in her arms, but if you could see her expression in the picture, you would understand why she was cropped out). Katie was kind enough to bring us some things to eat and spent about 2 hours yesterday showering Austin with love.

PS...as I type, he has been crying inconsolably for the last 30 minutes (hope it isn't a sign of what is to come later today)
