Side Sleeping and the Geocentric Feline

As I mentioned earlier, Austin seems to have a distaste for lying on his back, but pediatricians recommend not letting kids sleep on their stomachs due to the increased likelihood of SIDS...pretty sure both his mom and dad both slept on their bellies and survived to tell the tale, but I digress.

So...we tried to use rolled up receiving blankets to prop the little guy on his side, but they proved to be too soft and he was able to roll onto his back through the blankets, thus waking himself up in short order. Dad decided to get a little creative with a 2-person beach blanket...and he fit "snug as a bug".

How did Dad manage to keep him from rolling through the beach towel as he had done with the blankets? Beer Mugs...yep, Austin was bookended from both sides with beer mugs rolled inside a towel, and it worked like a charm. He managed to sleep the longest time in his bassinet (by far) on the first try. And yes...we went out and bought him "real" infant snuggling pads yesterday, thus ending the beer mug experiment.

A little funny anecdote, for those of you who may be familiar with our first "child"...Moxy has become more receptive to Austin's presence and will now sit or walk at our feet when Austin is being held. Surprisingly, she only hissed at him once yesterday. We found it funny that yesterday morning, as we were setting Austin's changing pad on the floor, Moxy immediately thought that we had purchased her a cat mattress and set up shop. Needless to say she was disappointed when she found out what we really intended to do with the pad and the amount of noise that Austin made when he was on it.
